JazzSpace: A Cultural Design Studio Exploring AI-Integrated Community Creation

International Proceedings

Author(s): Kyle Spence

The JazzSpace Design Studio is an innovative pedagogicalapproach merging architecture, jazz, and artificial intelligence(AI). Initially conceived as a representational drawing exerciseat Grimshaw Architects, this method evolved at Florida A&MUniversity (FAMU), a Historically Black University, integratingthe rich musical heritage of jazz, influenced by the legacy ofHoward University professor William Wesley Taylor. As anexpanding teaching methodology, JazzSpace blends practicalexperience with architectural theory, utilizing AI visualizationmethods and improvisational collage techniques to enhancedesign skills. This approach fosters creativity and adaptability, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges with innovativesolutions. The cultural impact of FAMU鈥檚 Marching 100band and celebrated alumni like Julian 鈥淐annonball鈥 Adderleyenriches the JazzSpace narrative, creating a vibrant backdropfor architectural exploration. Collage and mixed media, inspired by early 20th-century artists and Avant-Garde movements, play a significant role in JazzSpace. AI tools furtherdevelop these techniques, allowing students to visualizecomplex design concepts and explore new dimensions ofcreativity. The integration of AI in the design process enablesthe exploration of complex spatial relationships and thevisualization of intricate design concepts, fostering a deeperunderstanding of spatial dynamics and design principles. Thestudio also explores Afrofuturism as a foundation for architecturaldesign, demonstrating the potential of technologyin shaping the future of architectural design. The JazzSpaceDesign Studio aims to shape visionaries, integrating AI intothe curriculum to prepare students for a future where theyco-create with technology. The studio鈥檚 crowning project wasthe conceptualization of a new African American Museum inSt. Petersburg, Florida, expressing the rich tapestry of AfricanAmerican history and culture through design. JazzSpace ismore than a course; it鈥檚 a movement that encourages studentsto design with empathy, innovate responsibly, and createspaces that tell a story. This innovative framework bridgesthe past and the future, art and technology, tradition, andinnovation, offering a unique and forward-thinking approachto architectural education.
