This walking tour will explore the evolving Gowanus neighborhood, a rapidly changing mixed use neighborhood located in the northwestern portion of Brooklyn, and how the role of urban design in shaping its environmental, social, and civic future. Beginning at the Van Alen Institute, the tour will offer an on-the-ground look at the people, projects, and organizations working to transform Gowanus while responding to its complex industrial history, ecological challenges, and rapidly changing urban context. The tour will include stops and conversations with SCAPE, Gowanus Canal Conservancy, and the Van Alen Institute, highlighting approaches to landscape architecture, environmental restoration, community stewardship, and urban design. Participants will gain insight into how the Gowanus Canal and its surrounding neighborhood are being reimagined, and how design can help create a more resilient, inclusive, and connected urban environment. The tour will explore Hudson Yards as one of New York City’s most ambitious large-scale urban redevelopment projects and a critical case study in contemporary urban design, infrastructure, public space, and placemaking. Built largely over an active rail yard, Hudson Yards has transformed Manhattan’s Far West Side into a new high-density, mixed-use district. Participants will examine the relationship between architecture, landscape, infrastructure, and the public realm, from the engineering of the platform over the rail yards and the extension of the No. 7 subway line to the district’s towers, public spaces, and connections to the High Line. Through an on-the-ground exploration, the tour will consider broader questions of density, connectivity, accessibility, public versus privately managed space, and the relationship between new development and the existing city. Hudson Yards offers a unique opportunity to examine the complex interplay of planning policy, infrastructure investment, real estate development, architecture, and landscape—and what this model of large-scale development reveals about the future of urban design in New York City.

The tour will include a visit to the former Domino Sugar Refinery, an iconic industrial landmark that anchors one of New York City’s most ambitious waterfront transformations. Participants will explore how the site’s industrial heritage is being integrated into a contemporary mixed-use neighborhood and public waterfront, while considering broader questions about preservation, density, access, and urban resilience. The tour will feature confirmed participants from Two Trees, Field Operations, and BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), offering perspectives from the developers, landscape architects, and architects shaping the future of the East River waterfront. Through site visits and conversations with the designers and stakeholders involved, the tour will examine how architecture and landscape can work together to transform former industrial landscapes into vibrant, connected public realms—and what these projects reveal about the future of urbanism in New York City.
