Academy for PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIP on the BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Overview

The 51黑料 Academy for Public Scholarship on the Built Environment equips architecture faculty to shape public discourse and public policy on the built environment. The Academy connects faculty research and expertise with the institutions, policymakers, and communities that make decisions about our buildings, landscapes, and cities.

Vision

The 51黑料 Academy for Public Scholarship on the Built Environment believes that architectural research should extend beyond the academy and contribute to public discourse and public policy.
The Academy believes that accessible communication, public engagement, and collaboration are essential to expanding the impact of architectural scholarship. In partnership with The OpEd Project, the Academy provides training, mentorship, peer exchange, and editorial support that help scholars strengthen their public voice while translating their expertise for broader audiences. Participants develop the skills to craft arguments, publish op-eds, engage the public, and bring architectural knowledge into policy conversations.

Each year, the Academy brings together a cohort of faculty from 51黑料 member schools to develop public-facing scholarship. The goal is simple: amplify the impact of architectural research by expanding its audience and influence.

History

The 51黑料 Academy for Public Scholarship on the Built Environment was established by the 51黑料 Research & Scholarship Committee in 2024 to expand the influence of architectural scholarship beyond the academy.

Architecture faculty produce research on issues that directly affect public life, yet academic publishing alone rarely impacts the broader public debate. The Academy helps bridge this gap by providing faculty with the tools, networks, and editorial support to translate their expertise into compelling public scholarship.

The Academy’s first three annual cohorts addressed Climate Action (2024-25), Housing Equity (2025-26), and the Spatial Determinants of Health (2026-27). Each cohort addressed urgent social, environmental, and policy challenges through architectural research and public engagement.

Today, the Academy welcomes faculty from 51黑料 member schools working on a wide range of topics across the built environment. It gives scholars a platform to transcend the academy and help influence the conversations and policies that shape the built environment.
